Twinspires Pool One runs from Tuesday Nov. 1st through Thursday Nov. 3rd.
They are offering 40 choices this year which is massive. At least 30 of them can be tossed for this pool.
First early pool can only reveal those who have the 10f distance vs. those who don't. It can also reveal those who have the proper configurations to compete vs. those who don't. It can highlight the type of balance that consistently hits the board in the Derby.
This has nothing to do with any future Derby Preps and deals only with the Kentucky Derby early betting choices. Soundness, health, will and determination, ability to run to their breeding, proper prep placement, etc, cannot be determined this early.
Quick notes on each. There are 10 who have some promise from this Pool. There are four who have major promise if they stay healthy and sound. Choose wisely. The #1 thing is that the colt has 10f in him, regardless of how he did in his short maidens.
Boxing a few exactas at these odds with those who have the distance, style, potential, will and determination, correct trainer, and alliance with past Derby winners is essential.
POOL ONE
1. Andthewinneris 99-1
DP = 5-7-5-1-0 (18) DI = 4.14 CD = 0.89
Mare Profile = 7-4-7-5-6 Speed = 11 Stamina = 11 Index = 1.04 Triads = 18-16-18
Catalano has this 4.14 colt running on turf. Won his last at 8.5f coming from the back on turf at Keeneland. Very strange configurations for that type and so would steer clear of this guy for now. Numbers don't jive.
2. Awesome Strong 99-1
DP = 5-8-11-1-1 (26) DI = 2.47 CD = 0.58
Mare Profile = 8-3-2-6-10 Speed = 11 Stamina = 16 Index = 0.75 Triads = 13-11-18
Disadvantaged mid-range colt with sub-par mares configurations, although he does have 10.8f capability in his inheritance. Undefeated in 4 starts down at Gulfstream, so he is running against the bias and beating speedsters, albeit very slow. There is possibility here but the mares numbers are shady. Possibly better for Belmont, but even then, the mares are a bit off.
3. Blazing Sevens 30-1
DP = 3-6-7-0-0 (16) DI = 3.57 CD = 0.75
Mare Profile = 5-6-6-6-9 Speed = 11 Stamina = 15 Index = 0.73 Triads = 17-18-21
Killer Derby configurations but must display more speed on a clean surface to see if he can truly run to those numbers. Has more stamina in him than the normal 3.57 indexed colt which will affect his displayed speed.
4. Congruent 99-1
DP = 6-11-14-1-0 (32) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.69
Mare Profile = 8-4-4-4-9 Speed = 12 Stamina = 13 Index = 0.92 Triads = 16-12-17 (1st gen Tapit)
This is a very good set-up for the Derby from a 1st generation Tapit Colt. 3.00 is the cut-off. High potential, no problem with the distance, but so far, he has been very slow in his first four. Hold off to see if Sano can get that speed to shine through before Pool Two.
→ 5. Curly Jack 99-1
DP = 4-3-7-0-0 (14) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.79
Mare Profile = 5-6-5-10-7 Speed = 11 Stamina = 17 Index = 0.72 Triads = 16-21-22
Fantastic Belmont Stakes configurations which means he has the Derby distance blind-folded. Will be there if there is a pace meltdown. Not a bad thing to have in your back pocket this early in the game. You never know how the pace will unfold.
6. Cyclone Mischief 99-1
DP = 1-2-3-0-0 (6) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.67
Mare Profile = 6-7-4-7-4 Speed = 13 Stamina = 11 Index = 1.21 Triads = 17-18-15
Into Mischief son with nice stamina on top but the mares steal it away.
7. Damon’s Mound 80-1
DP = 0-4-4-0-0 (8) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.50
Mare Profile = 7-3-4-5-6 Speed = 10 Stamina = 11 Index = 1.00 Triads = 14-12-15
Not in this lifetime in the Kentucky Derby. Save your money and double up on Extra Anejo.
8. Echo Again 60-1
DP = 2-4-8-0-0 (14) DI = 2.50 CD = 0.57
Mare Profile = 6-3-6-8-5 Speed = 9 Stamina = 13 Index = 0.88 Triads = 15-17-19
Belmont Numbers so he has the distance. Showed killer stamina leanings at Saratoga. Performance lacking on the speedy bias in the Iroquios shows he leans endurance. May be better suited for Belmont but he does have the distance so, hold off this pool. Important to gauge how he handles his speed side going forward. This is very important with these types.
9. Expected Value 99-1
DP = 8-5-11-0-0 (24) DI = 3.36 CD = 0.88
Mare Profile = 9-3-2-3-9 Speed = 12 Stamina = 12 Index = 1.00 Triads = 14-8-14
Chad Brown trained rear runner with very nice chefs configurations but the mares side is highly lacking for the Derby. He is just short of the distance and evenly spread through his mares. Very tight.
→ 10. Extra Anejo 20-1 +++++
DP = 1-2-6-5-0 (14) DI = 0.75 CD = -0.07
Mare Profile = 2-11-6-9-5 Speed = 13 Stamina = 14 Index = 0.84 Triads = 19-26-20
Into Mischief son with stamina overload, running on the lead. Killer numbers. Absolutely YES for the Derby. No question about it. If the Derby were running tomorrow, I would single this guy on top with Loggins, (and two others) to fill out the exacta. That is exactly what I will be doing in this pool. Let's hope he stays healthy and safe; he is a major potential star. Could be the twin of Epicenter with style, balance and configurations basically exact to the Champ. Serious endurance coupled with lead speed. Packed triads. Negative CD. It's all there. Asmussen is set.
→ 11. Forbidden Secret 99-1
DP = 2-1-1-0-0 (4) DI = 7.00 CD = 1.25
Mare Profile = 5-6-6-12-2 Speed = 11 Stamina = 14 Index = 1.00 Triads = 17-24-20
Here's something to take notice of. Pletcher boy who will be holding some muscle if it rains. Packed triads with 7x the speed,. Will gain lengths on a wet track. Mare dominant. Not a bad idea to have on the side at these odds, plenty of rainy editions in the past. Great mare's numbers with only 4 points from the chefs. Tight, but not bad. Suited for Preakness.
12. Forte 15-1
DP = 4-4-5-1-0 (14) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.79
Mare Profile = 11-2-5-1-11 Speed = 13 Stamina = 12 Index = 1.04 Triads = 18-8-17
This is not a good set-up for the Kentucky Derby. It's off through the mares, with zero advantage. Hold off til Pool two to see if he can get that stamina going.
13. Frank’s Honor 99-1
DP = 5-8-10-1-0 (24) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.71
Mare Profile = 6-5-6-1-10 Speed = 11 Stamina = 11 Index = 0.85 Triads = 17-12-17
Has about 10.1f capability even with the low CD and lower mare index. Triads are off but looks to be a better runner the further it goes. Hold off on this guy til Pool Two. First 2 maidens were highly disastrous, 3rd he won going better but still slow. Triads are not good at all.
→ 14. Full Moon Madness 99-1
DP = 0-1-1-0-0 (2) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.50
Mare Profile = 5-7-7-10-3 Speed = 12 Stamina = 13 Index = 1.04 Triads = 19-24-20
Into Mischief boy with killer Derby numbers. Killer displayed speed on the lead at Aqueduct traveling only 6.5f. Massive Mares numbers. Not a bad bet here with those odds with this type of potential, rain or shine.
15. General Jim 99-1
DP = 1-2-3-0-0 (6) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.67
Mare Profile = 7-7-6-7-4 Speed = 14 Stamina = 11 Index = 1.29 Triads = 20-20-17
Another Into Mischief son who failed on dirt but tore it up on Turf. Twice. Seems that's where Shug might keep him, although, longer distance on dirt is not out of the question. Wait for Pool two to see what Shug does with him. Nice configurations.
16. Gulfport 80-1
DP = 2-12-2-0-0 (16) DI = 15.00 CD = 1.00
Mare Profile = 8-1-8-5-5 Speed = 9 Stamina = 10 Index = 1.09 Triads = 17-14-18
Not for the 10f Derby. Sprinter/Miler
17. Hayes Strike 99-1
DP = 2-2-4-0-0 (8) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.75
Mare Profile = 7-4-2-13-8 Speed = 11 Stamina = 21 Index = 0.65 Triads = 13-19-23
Wow! Look at the stamina in the mares! Wow! Belmont Stakes all day long. That means he has the 10f easily. But by his "slow as molasses" races so far, shows he really is favoring those mares a great deal. 10 point spread to stamina with a 3.00 index. Remember him for June, but keep an eye going forward. We need full evidence of killer speed to go with these numbers.
18. Hit Show 99-1
DP = 2-5-6-1-0 (14) DI = 2.50 CD = 0.57
Mare Profile = 6-2-4-6-8 Speed = 8 Stamina = 14 Index = 0.69 Triads = 12-12-18
These numbers are no good for the Kentucky Derby. Highly disadvantaged there but possible for Belmont. Distance no problem.
19. Hurricane J 99-1
DP = 2-2-4-0-0 (8) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.75
Mare Profile = 9-0-7-4-7 Speed = 9 Stamina = 11 Index = 1.00 Triads = 16-11-18
Boring numbers will never do in Kentucky. Horrendous triads.
20. Instant Coffee 99-1
DP = 4-5-4-1-0 (14) DI = 3.67 CD = 0.86
Mare Profile = 9-5-3-6-7 Speed = 14 Stamina = 13 Index = 1.13 Triads = 17-14-16
Mares are backwards for the Derby. No chance.
→ 21. Joking Way 99-1
DP = 1-2-1-0-0 (4) DI = 7.00 CD = 1.00
Mare Profile = 7-5-4-10-4 Speed = 12 Stamina = 14 Index = 1.05 Triads = 16-19-18
Not bad, but these are more "board-hit" numbers than winning numbers. Highly favorable if it rains and will gain additional lengths on a wet track. Possible, but tight. Mare dominant in balance.
→ 22. Loggins 30-1 ++++
DP = 2-6-6-0-0 (14) DI = 3.67 CD = 0.71
Mare Profile = 4-4-6-10-4 Speed = 8 Stamina = 14 Index = 0.75 Triads = 14-20-20
Absolutely, Positively, 101% Yes. He has the numbers, the distance, the style, and the determination. His configurations are perfect for the Derby. These are winning numbers on a clean track. Take note if he runs on a wet track in any preps, if he does well on a wet bias, all the better. He'd be running through his numbers which gives him even more advantage. Excellent prospect here and worth the gamble at 30-1.
23. Lost Ark 50-1
DP = 5-10-14-1-0 (30) DI = 2.75 CD = 0.63
Mare Profile = 8-2-2-2-11 Speed = 10 Stamina = 13 Index = 0.77 Triads = 12-6-15
Very disadvantaged numbers for the Derby, both top and bottom but he does have the distance. This is the type that needs to be highly monitored along the way. Like the 30 points in the profile but the mares are horrendous, especially with that 2.75 mid-range index.
24. Mr. Ripple 99-1
DP = 2-4-8-0-0 (14) DI = 2.50 CD = 0.57
Mare Profile = 13-3-2-6-8 Speed = 16 Stamina = 14 Index = 1.29 Triads = 18-11-16
Another highly disadvantaged colt if he should even secure a Derby gate. Balance flipped in the mares and the triads are highly sub-par.
25. Ohana Honor 99-1
DP = 4-10-16-0-0 (30) DI = 2.75 CD = 0.60
Mare Profile = 6-4-5-6-7 Speed = 10 Stamina = 13 Index = 0.84 Triads = 15-15-18
Same as Mr. Ripple.
26. Post Time 99-1
DP = 1-4-7-0-0 (12) DI = 2.43 CD = 0.50
Mare Profile = 9-6-3-6-9 Speed = 15 Stamina = 15 Index = 1.00 Triads = 18-15-18 (2nd gen Tapit)
Second generation Tapit son with a 2.43 index "usually" has a hard time in the Derby because of the strong pull to the stamina side on the balance. Ran very well last out and his stamina was on full display. 50-50 here, but even then, barn is also iffy as well.
27. Protege 99-1
DP = 1-5-4-0-0 (10) DI = 4.00 CD = 0.70
Mare Profile = 7-6-3-6-8 Speed = 13 Stamina = 14 Index = 0.92 Triads = 16-15-17
Mares configurations are not good enough.
→ 28. Rocket Can 80-1
DP = 1-4-3-0-0 (8) DI = 4.33 CD = 0.75
Mare Profile = 5-7-7-8-2 Speed = 12 Stamina = 10 Index = 1.26 Triads = 19-22-17 (2nd gen Tapit)
Bill Mott's barn with Johnny V as jockey. This is a very good Derby prospect. Another Into Mischief boy but this time with Tapit in him as well. Fantastic configurations with a chart to match. This is very promising here.
29. Rudder’s Men 60-1
DP = 4-15-7-0-0 (26) DI = 6.43 CD = 0.88
Mare Profile = 10-1-4-5-7 Speed = 11 Stamina = 12 Index = 1.09 Triads = 15-10-16
Not a chance in hell. He'll be just fine up to 9f but then he hits a wall.
→ 30. Signator 60-1
DP = 8-9-16-1-0 (34) DI = 2.78 CD = 0.71
Mare Profile = 11-3-3-4-10 Speed = 14 Stamina = 14 Index = 1.04 Triads = 17-10-17 (1st gen Tapit)
This 2.78 Tapit boy has 34 total points. Could be worth a shot. Slaughtered his opponents traveling 8f on the dirt for Shug. Could be a good prospect even with the 2.78 index.
→ 31. Tapit’s Conquest 99-1
DP = 4-11-12-1-0 (28) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.64
Mare Profile = 9-3-4-6-9 Speed = 12 Stamina = 15 Index = 0.89 Triads = 16-13-19 (1st gen Tapit)
And another Tapit son but this one has a favorable 3.00 index. Did very well at 8.5f at Churchill to win by 3-1/2 lengths while stalking. Like the style, the speed, the track preference and the 3.00 index. Brad Cox trainer. Worth a gamble.
32. Ten Days Later 80-1
DP = 4-6-6-0-0 (16) DI = 4.33 CD = 0.88
Mare Profile = 6-7-4-10-4 Speed = 13 Stamina = 14 Index = 1.05 Triads = 17-21-18
Nice numbers but he is a very slow rear runner. Needs to display much more speed to be taken seriously. Wait for Pool Two, if he is even there.
33. Tres Soles 99-1
DP = 3-7-6-0-0 (16) DI = 4.33 CD = 0.81
Mare Profile = 11-2-4-6-8 Speed = 13 Stamina = 14 Index = 1.08 Triads = 17-12-18
Justify boy who is not in Baffert's barn. That's all that needs to be said.
34. Tuskegee Airmen 99-1
DP = 5-4-8-1-0 (18) DI = 2.60 CD = 0.72
Mare Profile = 7-5-3-7-6 Speed = 12 Stamina = 13 Index = 1.00 Triads = 15-15-16
Absolutely no chance in the Kentucky Derby.
35. Two Phil’s 99-1
DP = 2-7-11-0-0 (20) DI = 2.64 CD = 0.55
Mare Profile = 3-4-8-8-5 Speed = 7 Stamina = 13 Index = 0.69 Triads = 15-20-21
Half decent Derby numbers that lean to the Belmont. Inbred speed is lacking so it tilts the scale to the stamina side. Wait for Pool Two to see if he can display some speed going forward.
36. Tyler’s Tribe 99-1
DP = 1-6-1-0-0 (8) DI = 15.00 CD = 1.00
Mare Profile = 6-5-5-9-3 Speed = 11 Stamina = 12 Index = 1.10 Triads = 16-19-17
Configurations point to a speed demon under 9f.
37. Verifying 60-1
DP = 1-2-3-0-0 (6) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.67
Mare Profile = 9-1-6-7-6 Speed = 10 Stamina = 13 Index = 1.00 Triads = 16-14-19
Boring numbers that show no allegiance to the Derby.
→ 38. Victory Formation 80-1
DP = 5-8-9-0-0 (22) DI = 3.89 CD = 0.82
Mare Profile = 10-4-4-10-5 Speed = 14 Stamina = 15 Index = 1.17 Triads = 18-18-19 (2nd gen Tapit)
Absolutely a must for Pool One at these odds. Killer 2nd generation Tapit numbers, a 3.89 speedy index with packed triads. Yes. Yes. Yes.
39. All Fillies 80-1
40. All other Colts and Geldings 3-5
