Into Mischief
Every year that we travel down a new road to the Kentucky Derby, there is at least one son of Into Mischief who rises to the top with his perfect configurations and his astonishing will to win.
There are still a couple of months to go before the top list starts to take shape, undoubtedly to consist of at least one of Into Mischief's sons. Could it be Chad Brown's latest maiden Winner?
PRAETOR Into Mischief - Curlin's Approval (Curlin)
Trainer: Chad Brown
DP = 1-3-4-0-0 (8) DI = 3.00 CD = 0.63 ANZ = 4.00 CD = 0.70
Mare Profile = 4-7-7-8-5 Speed = 11 Stamina = 13 Index = 0.88 Triads = 18-22-20
St. Simon: 26.16%
The major influence when it comes to Into Mischief is the presence of the killer combination of Ribot and Flower Bowl. That is where the intense impact from St. Simon originates through to his sons. Some grab ahold, some do not but it is fairly easy to distinguish any apparent significance from the beginning of their career.
As usual, this Into Mischief son is loaded through his mares with a huge balance of speed through his chefs. We have seen this over and over again through the years as they eventually make their way into a coveted gate at Churchill Downs in May.
Let's break down some of the evidence that may point to a promising forward career which may ultimately point to him as the one who could represent his sire in 2025 in the Kentucky Derby.
As we already know, most every Into Mischief boy will reside on the dominant speed side through his chefs and his mares will impart the massive stamina side.
Through his "minimal chefs" influence though, he is sitting on the lower end of the speed category with his 3.00 index and lower 0.63 CD. It is through his additions of his prominent non-chefs that hike him up to four times the amount of speed over stamina.
The stamina side is massive, with a tilt through his chefs, his mares, and through the 26% linebreeding to St. Simon. This could easily be the reason why he exploded at Aqueduct traveling 8f. A much more conducive track bias and a distance that is starting to come closer to his optimum.
This horse broke from the gate, took the lead, and took it gate to wire. But there was another competitor who was hot on his tail at the wire who just so happens to be an Into Mischief son as well. His name is Sovereignty.
SOVEREIGNTY Into Mischief - Crowned (Bernardini)
Trainer: Bill Mott
DP = 2-3-3-0-0 (8) DI = 4.33 CD = 0.88 ANZ = 7.00 CD = 0.92
Mare Profile = 3-10-5-7-4 Speed = 13 Stamina = 11 Index = 1.05 Triads = 18-22-16
St. Simon = 16.41%
Sovereignty tracked Praetor through the race and accelerated down the stretch, missing by a neck.
While Praetor has a "prettier" set of mare configurations, especially in the triads, Sovereignty is built with more inbred speed. The last slot of his triads are a couple points off, but this aspect could be offset by Bernardini's line and the St. Simon affect. He was able to settle, reserving his speed for the late burst. Style and substance.
Both of these Into Mischief sons deserve to be tracked as the distances lengthen out.
BRAVE MISSION (GB) Frankel - Bravo Sierra (Siyouni)
Trainer: Ralph Beckett
DP = 1-3-13-9-0 (26) DI = 0.68 CD = -0.15 ANZ = 0.88 CD = -0.03
Mare Profile = 4-7-4-12-7 Speed = 11 Stamina = 19 Index = 0.63 Triads = 15-23-23
St. Simon: 53.91%
Not every promising overseas runner has to come out of Aiden O'Brien's barn, especially when one of them runs like a beast on the AWS and is the son of Frankel.
This horse has exquisite configurations and was not very successful in his first two races on turf, but then exploded on the All Weather Surface at Kempton against a full field of eleven. It was quite the performance.
Full of stamina, exhibiting late speed, with ability to run on the AWS, may just pan out for a surprising type of career and away from the turf. He has a balance and scale that is very similar to an "Epicenter type".
His late run and the power that he showed into the stretch was so masterful that he is one to keep on the sidelines just in case he shows up in Dubai in April. This is a long way off, but at the very least, his path should be monitored along the way.
I know Gerard is quite fond of these types, as well as I!!
Here is a link to his monster performance traveling only 7f. He is the # 4 horse and his jockey, Rossa Ryan is wearing the pink cap: Kempton Sept 6
A WORD TO THE WISE
There will be plenty of new two-year-olds who will be touted as colts with very high promise over the next few months. As I always say, beware of the hype for the speedy pretenders. Though they may be ripe for success in certain divisions, the horse will most likely have ZERO potential as a 10f Kentucky Derby player.
It is all about the breeding.
There will be plenty who impress with their speed along the way, however, they will not be holding the necessary optimal distance capabilities to make it around a 10f track. Be aware of the configurations and what the individuals are displaying in these shorter early races.
Take note of the tracks that they are exploding on and do not dismiss these overseas monsters along the way.
Japan, Great Britain, Ireland and Saudi Arabia are hungry for that trophy and every year that goes by, they get closer and closer to success. One of the main reasons for this is because their horses still contain maximum stamina and as they move along, they are capitalizing off of importing our stallions into their sheds.
Eventually, the combinations will produce massive speed capability through those sires along with their magnificent stamina qualities.
Meanwhile, back in the States, it shall remain a "Speed-fest" in our sheds. As we breed out stamina with an emphasis on speed, what they are doing overseas is quite the opposite. Across the oceans, they will eventually find the perfect mix and they will succeed. It has already begun.
The greed for speed does not simply end the paradox. That greed for the almighty dollar as they forfeit our sires to these overseas barns will ultimately bite the Americans in the ass. These breeders are taking full advantage and they will produce colts who are holding the perfect mix of Major Stamina that they have kept intact with Major Speed that we are handing over.
We are losing top sires who impart speed while they are holding all of the stamina cards. We simply cannot rely on a handful of sires that are left here to get these speed demons around a 10f track.
The tables are turning and they are gaining ground while we are left with beasts in the Sprinter and Miler Divisions. As the years go by, this will be center stage. Mark my words.
Gone are the days when the overseas runners are brushed under the carpet when it comes to dirt running. They are much wiser than we want to admit, therefore, a strong eye must remain on what is transpiring on their tracks.
With horses like City of Troy, Forever Young, Derma Sotogake, Ushba Tesoro, Le Vent Se Leve, Thunder Snow, Mendelssohn and Toast of New York, among many others, it is simply a matter of time. They are winning in the sheds. We must stay on top of it.
Hi Lisa, a couple of things. ZABO is running in a one mile dirt race Monday Oct 14th, Race 8 at Santa Anita.
ZERO TOLERANCE 24' I'm interested in your stat sheet on this new guy from Commonwealth (born March 18, 2024). He's a 3/4 brother to Parenting by Justify out of the Mizzen Mast mare Zero Tolerance. He's not in Equibase yet, but does have a HRN page. Google Zero Tolerance 24' Commonwealth
Another English trainer who is becoming a major force is Karl Burke.Last week he sent out the first three home in the Ayr Gold Cup.All were 4 year olds and the number of starts these horses have made is mind boggling by American standards.
Lethal Levi -36 starts (9 7 4)
Silky Wilkie -47 starts (6 17 3)
Korker - 34 starts (6 8 4)
Yesterday he sent out a 3 year old called Liberty Lane to win the Cambridgeshire carrying top weight of 138 pounds.That was his 13th start ( 4 2 0).
